Custom Paper – Advanced Settings

When creating an image for use with the Custom Paper feature, the following tips may come in handy.

Images of any size may be used with this feature.  In some rare cases, undesired scaling may occur.  If so, for best results please use the image sizes specified below.  For each type of paper, either create the image on your computer and email it to your device, saving it to your Photo Library (by tapping and holding on the image), or use one of the many image editing apps available to create the image directly on your device.  In some cases an image can be captured directly from your device using your device’s built-in screenshot capability.

Once the image has been saved to your Photo Library, launch Mental Note to configure the custom paper settings.

1. Letterhead

iPad: Size your image to a width of 768 px
iPhone / iPod touch: Size your image to a width of 320 px

If you need the letterhead for both devices, don’t create an extra image for iPhone / iPod touch.  It is okay to use the iPad image on iPhone / iPod touch.

Fit to page: Off
Display in header: On
Repeat: Off

Depending on the height of your letterhead, you may be able to type extra information into the letterhead on each note.

2. Watermark

Use a white background for the image.
Adjust the Settings -> Paper -> Colour to White.
Adjust the Settings -> Paper -> Type to Plain.

If you prefer the page lines to be visible, set Paper -> Type to Lined, and adjust the alpha value of your image so it’s slightly transparent.

iPad: Size your image to a width of 768 px and height of 1004 px
iPhone / iPod touch: Size your image to a width of 320 px and a height of 480 px

If you need the watermark for both devices, don’t create an extra image for iPhone / iPod touch.  It is okay to use the iPad image on iPhone / iPod touch.

Fit to page: On
Display in header: On
Repeat: On

3. Colour and texture

Create a small image (e.g. 10px x 10px, but doesn’t have to be square) of your own coloured or textured page.

Fit to page: On
Display in header: On
Repeat: On

4. Simple form

One way to get an image of a short (1 page or less) PDF form is to open the form on your device (e.g. in iBooks), and then take a screenshot of the form – this will save an image of the form to your Photo Library.

For a longer form, open the PDF on your Mac in Preview, then select File -> Save As, and select the PNG format.  On Windows, use a utility to perform the conversion; or use PrintScreen and Paint.

If you’re creating a form from scratch and it’s a one page form:

iPad: Size your image to a width of 768 px and height of 1004 px
iPhone / iPod touch: Size your image to a width of 320 px and a height of 480 px

Fit to page: On
Repeat: Off

If you want to create a book of 1 page forms:

Repeat: On

If it’s a multi-page form:

iPad: Size your image to a width of 768 px
iPhone / iPod touch: Size your image to a width of 320 px

Fit to page: Off
Repeat: Off

If you need the form for both devices, don’t create an extra image for iPhone / iPod touch.  It is okay to use the iPad image on iPhone / iPod touch.
